출생 (Live Birth) is a new body of work produced during the artist’s three week residency at Pilseungsa. During her time here, she reflected on her birthplace and the origins of life, while visiting her childhood neighbourhood and wondering around various markets for materials. The resulting range of objects became items used for Doljabi, a Korean ceremonial game played on a child’s first birthday as a way to foretell their future. Objects are traditionally displayed on the floor, with things like a string representing a long life; money = wealth; pencil = scholar; food = will not go hungry, and other variations. Whichever item the child gravitates towards first will foretell their trajectory in life. The artist’s twist on Doljabi objects are installed throughout the gallery, mining the whole space as a game plane. It is a deeply autobiographical work, as well as an experiment on legibility—how objects are read in relation to space, cultural views, and the symbolism embedded in each piece.

출생 (Live Birth)는 작가가 필승사에서 3주간 레지던시 생활을 하는 동안 제작한 설치작업이다. 작가는 이 전시를 위해 캐나다로 이민 가기 전 어린 시절을 보낸 동네를 방문하고 다양한 재료를 구하러 시장을 돌아다니며 자신이 태어난 곳과 생명의 기원에 대해 성찰한다. 이렇게 만들어진 다양한 오브제들은 갓난 아이의 첫 돌을 맞아 미래를 점치는 한국의 전통 놀이인 돌잡이에 사용되는 물건이 되었다. 전통적으로 오브제들은 바닥에 놓이는데, 줄은 장수를, 돈은 부를, 연필은 학자를, 음식은 배고프지 않음을 상징하는 등 다양한 의미를 담고 있다. 아이가 어떤 오브제에 먼저 끌리느냐에 따라 아이의 삶의 궤적이 결정됩니다. 작가가 돌잡이 오브제에 새롭게 해석한 작품들은 갤러리 곳곳에 설치되어 공간 전체를 하나의 게임판으로 활용한다. 이는 깊이 있는 자전적 작품이자, 공간, 문화적 관점, 그리고 각 작품에 내재된 상징주의와 관련하여 오브제가 어떻게 읽히는지에 대한 가독성에 대한 실험이기도 하다.
